Baker Mayfield gets statue in Oklahoma with NFL future in limbo

Baker Mayfield’s future remains uncertain, but his past is forever immortalized.

The University of Oklahoma unveiled a larger-than-life statue of Mayfield during Saturday’s spring football game. The 2017 Heisman Trophy winner is tanned in the famous Heisman pose, which is not coincidentally representative of the stiff arm he gave Oklahoma State linebacker Justin Phillips that season during the rivalry from the Bedlam series.

“For this to be a stiff arm from your little brother,” Mayfield said, snapping a photo of Oklahoma State’s second fiddle status during the halftime ceremony, “forever they have to deal of that.”

There had been speculation that the statue of Mayfield might be in the pose of him sadly planting the Oklahoma flag on the Ohio State field after a road victory. Not to be, but the former Texas Tech transfer, who was a walk-on in Oklahoma after growing up as a Sooners fan, will be added to the program’s iconic ‘Heisman Park’ along with fellow Billy Vessels greats. , Steve Owens, Billy Sims, Jason White and Sam Bradford.

“I dreamed of having a statue right there, and now I do,” Mayfield told the crowd. “It’s impressive.”

The crowd of over 75,000 fans chanted, “I love you, Baker,” which nearly brought the quarterback to tears. “I love you guys too,” he said.

In contrast, Mayfield didn’t feel the love of the NFL.

The Cleveland Browns gave up the No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft this offseason by trading a boatload of draft picks to the Houston Texans for Deshaun Watson. Mayfield remains on the Browns’ roster but away from the squad while we wait to see if his trade request will be met.

Teams like the Seattle Seahawks and Carolina Panthers could trade for Mayfield, 27, rather than draft Kenny Pickett or Malik Willis with the top 10 picks later this week, but they’d likely want salary cap relief from the Mayfield’s fully guaranteed $18.8 million salary for 2022, the final year of his contract.

“This is my home,” Mayfield told Oklahoma fans. “It will always be at home. I want to say that.”
