BOSTON — Boston Public Schools on Tuesday named the two finalists who are in the running to become the city’s next superintendent.

Mary Skipper, the current Superintendent of Somerville Public Schools, and Dr. Tommy Welch, the Region 1 School Superintendent in Boston, will participate in a public interview process on Thursday and Friday following the recommendation of the nine-member search committee, according to BPS.

The search committee was formed earlier this year when Superintendent of Boston Public Schools, Dr. Brenda Cassellius, announced plans to resign after three years as leader of the state’s largest school system.

Skipper is in her seventh year as superintendent in Somerville. She joined SPS in July 2015 following a career with BPS and “quickly made her mark in Somerville as an innovative and visionary thinker, a passionate advocate for all youth, and a strategic systems builder whose approach includes leveraging community resources to support students,” according to a news release.

Welch supports 15 schools across Charlestown, East Boston, and the North End that serve over 7,000 students. His work “prioritizes the improvement of the academic outcomes of students and connects leaders and resources within the network to provide a coherent instructional vision for all schools,” officials said.

The public interview process will include three community panels followed by a public interview by the Boston School Committee.

Mayor Michelle Wu plans to recommend an acting superintendent from June 30 until then next superintendent’s start date.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
