Former MLB player and current YES Network New York Yankees broadcaster Carlos Beltran opened up on Monday about his role in the 2017 Houston Astros sign-stealing scandal.

He was the only player apparently involved in the scheme, which earned suspensions for the Astros’ general manager and manager and public condemnation of the franchise.

Around the time the scandal reached public opinion, Beltran was named manager of the New York Mets.

He was, in fact, one of the hottest leadership candidates in MLB: he was always considered an extremely intelligent player with great instincts and a high baseball IQ.

Additionally, he was considered a leader during his playing days, especially late in his career with the Mets, Yankees, and Astros.

Beltran feels he missed a wonderful opportunity to manage an MLB team

Beltran is still upset that he may have missed his managerial career opportunity because of the scandal.

Due to public pressure, the Mets and Beltran decided to part ways before he even managed a game.

The scandal was at its height and the Mets could not afford to have him as their manager.

“More Carlos Beltran on @YESNetwork earlier: ‘It was hard, because at the end of the day, I felt that I had deserved this (#put) work. I wanted to experience that, as a manager,” tweeted Neil Best.

If AJ Hinch, the Astros’ manager in that 2017 season, served his time and eventually returned to management in an MLB dugout, then Beltran also deserves to return eventually, as a manager.

Maybe MLB teams are scared of the potential PR nightmares if they hire him, but the truth is, he’s more than qualified to run an MLB organization, and that’s already a thing of the past: he hasn’t played baseball in a while, and deserves to have a shot finally.
