The parents of Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Dwayne Haskins said they would not attend his funeral on Friday.
“We never met or spoke to the woman, and we didn’t want our son’s funeral to be where we first met her,” Dwayne Sr. and Tamara Haskins said in a statement. statement to USA TODAY Sports.
Haskins was killed on April 9 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, while trying to cross a freeway and was hit by a dump truck. He was 24 years old. The Florida Highway Patrol said in an accident report that Haskins was also struck by a second vehicle.
A 911 call later revealed that Haskins’ wife had called Pittsburgh authorities to let them know Haskins had run out of gas and was walking for help. She called 911 after getting no response from him.
Two memorials are planned in Haskins’ honor – a Saturday in Rockaway Township, New Jersey, and a vigil planned for Sunday at Haskins’ high school, Bullis School in Potomac, Maryland.
Haskins was born in Highland Park, New Jersey and moved to Maryland in ninth grade.
Kalabrya and Dwayne Haskins married in March 2021. In July, Kalabrya Haskins was arrested in Las Vegas and indicted for felony battery and domestic violence after an argument that resulted in Dwayne Haskins suffering from a split upper lip and of a missing tooth. The case was closed in January 2022.
The Florida Highway Patrol is still trying to determine the circumstances of Haskins’ death and won’t comment until their investigation is complete, which could take up to 90 days.
