After the start of IPL 2022, there has been a big positive development in women’s cricket. The T20 Women’s Challenge is set to be hosted by Lucknow in May. The tournament will take place from May 24-28. The competition will continue its journey with three participating teams namely Supernovas, Trailblazers and Velocity.
“The Women’s Challenger Series will be held from May 24-28 at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow,” BCCI chairman Ganguly told media.
The tournament started in 2018 but did not take place in 2021 due to Covid-19 restrictions. The Supernovas have won the title twice while the Trailblazers are the defending champions. Velocity was a runner-up in the 2019 season. Many female cricketers have voiced their opinion on the need for a full-fledged women’s IPL. Ganguly said earlier that the BCCI will work to launch the women’s IPL by 2023.
“We are at the formulation level to have a fully-fledged WIPL. It will definitely happen. I strongly believe that next year i.e. 2023 will be a very good time to start a women’s IPL at full-fledged which will be as big and a big hit as a men’s IPL,” Ganguly said as quoted by news agency PTI in February.
