Madison Cawthorn tries to define what a woman is

Rep. Madison Cawthorn took to the House on Monday to give her definition of a woman. In an 80-second speech, the North Carolina Republican accused fellow liberals of waging a “war on biology.”

“You can amend a bill, but you’ll never amend biology. Science isn’t Burger King. You can’t do as you please,” he said.

His remarks came as the Senate Judiciary Committee considers the Supreme Court nomination of Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson. Jackson was asked during her recent confirmation hearings by Republican Senator Marsha Blackburn to provide a definition of the word women. “Can I provide a definition? Jackson replied. “I can’t… Not in this context. I’m not a biologist.”

Blackburn’s questioning touched on the current burning issue of gender politics. Conservative leaders recently hit out at the NCAA over its stance on transgender athletes after swimmer Lia Thomas dominated competition this year. And Florida Governor Ron DeSantis just signed a controversial piece of legislation, which critics are calling the “Don’t Say Gay” bill, that would ban certain instructions about sexual orientation and gender identity from kindergarten to at least the third year.

On Monday, Cawthorn shared his thoughts on the matter.

“I never imagined that one of my sacred duties in this sacred chamber would be to explain to the Speaker of the House the difference between a man and a woman,” he said. “Take notes, Madam President, I’m about to define what a woman is for you: XX chromosomes, no plotter. It’s that simple.”

The comments were quickly seized upon by Katie Dean, a Democrat running against Cawthorn in November.

“Today Madison Cawthorn said the definition of a woman includes the term ‘no timer’ and that ‘science is not Burger King’. If Congress doesn’t kick him out, I will defeat him” , Dean wrote on Twitter.

On Monday, GOP Rep. Madison Cawthorn took to the House floor to offer her definition of the word “woman.” Above, Cawthorn arrives for the State of the Union address on March 1.

Cawthorn recently came under fire from his party leaders after he claimed he was asked by his GOP colleagues in Washington, DC, to take cocaine and participate in orgies.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy has publicly stated that Cawthorn lost his confidence over the remarks, which was a stronger condemnation than he had for GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene. after attending a white nationalist event.

“My comments on a recent podcast appearance calling for corruption have been used by the left and the media to disparage my fellow Republicans and falsely insinuate their involvement in illicit activities,” Cawthorn said later in a statement.

Newsweek contacted Pelosi’s office to comment on Cawthorn’s speech, but did not hear back before publication.
