Manchester U captain Harry Maguire victim of bomb threat

Thursday should have been a relatively happy day for Premier League club Manchester United as they announced Ajax boss Erik ten Hag would become their first-team manager after this season.

However, United were making headlines for a much different reason.

As Sky Sports and The Athletic’s Laurie Whitwell explained, police have been called to the home of United captain Harry Maguire to investigate a bomb threat that the footballer took seriously. According to Manchester Evening News’ Jack Flintham, Maguire has regularly been the target of online criticism due to perceived poor performances, including in Tuesday’s 4-0 loss to rivals Liverpool.

Maguire lives with his fiancée and their two children.

“On Wednesday April 20, Cheshire Police were called to report a bomb threat at an address in the Wilmslow area,” police said in a statement. ‘No evacuation has taken place, but as a precaution an explosives police dog attended the address this afternoon, Thursday 21 April, to carry out a search of the gardens and surrounding area.’

A Maguire spokesperson added:

“In the past 24 hours, Harry has received a serious threat to his family home. He has reported this to the police who are currently looking into the matter. The safety of his family and those around him is obviously the number one priority of Harry.

“He will continue to prepare for this weekend’s game as usual and we won’t be commenting in more detail at this time.”

United next face Arsenal on Saturday.
