MEDFORD, Mass. — The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority on Friday announced that the newly opened Green Line Extension will close later this month for four weeks to help facilitate the opening of the new Medford branch and allow for final-phase construction work.

Shuttle buses will replace Green Line Union Branch service between Government Center and Union Square stations in both directions beginning Monday, August 22, through Sunday, September 18.

Transit officials noted that this diversion in service is also necessary to allow for continued work at the Government Center Garage project.

The opening date of the Medford Branch has been shifted from its previous target date of late summer 2022 to late November 2022 due to a number of contributing factors, including necessary additional work and re-testing of the Medford Branch’s power systems and the availability of safety and operational support crews, according to the MBTA.

“The MBTA is in full support of making these safety-related changes, and appreciates the support of riders and the public as the Medford Branch is brought into passenger service,” transit officials said in a news release.

During this service disruption, Green Line riders traveling inbound and outbound between Government Center and Union Square will board free and accessible shuttle buses, which will make stops at Lechmere station and the Lechmere Station Bus Loop. Shuttle buses will not stop at Science Park station, which is within close walking distance to North Station.

Passenger service along the GLX’s first of two branches, the Union Branch, began in March 2022.

This Green Line news comes just two days after the MBTA an announced an “unprecedented” move to shut down the entire Orange Line for a month on Aug. 19 in an effort to complete “critical track maintenance” amid mounting safety issues.
