Mikel Arteta has blasted Arsenal’s “unacceptable” performance in their resounding defeat at Crystal Palace.

The Gunners suffered a blow in their pursuit of Champions League football by losing 3-0 at Selhurst Park.

Arteta isn’t complaining about how the result turned out but has many issues with the way his team played.

He told Sky Sports after the game: “First of all, congratulations to Crystal Palace on the game they played.

“I think we made it impossible for ourselves, the way we competed. We talked about it before the game – you have to compete on this court, you have to be physical, you have to win the first and second balls, win the challenges and then you win the right to play.

“We kind of deserved it but we were really poor, we were really inconsistent on the ball, giving the ball away time and time again.

“At this level it is unacceptable so today we have to accept that we were far from our level, especially in the first half and I apologize to our supporters…”

The result saw Arsenal legend Patrick Vieira get the better of his former club as Palace moved up to ninth in the Premier League table.

Vieira enjoyed a very productive first season as Palace boss, guiding them to the FA Cup semi-finals and putting them in an excellent position to achieve their best Premier League result.

He is impressing his former club’s fans, with Arsenal supporter Josh saying he would like to see Vieira take charge of the Emirates Stadium.

Asked by Sports Bar co-host Jermaine Pennant if he wanted Vieira to replace Arteta if Arsenal didn’t finish in the top four, Josh said: “I said probably in December, I actually said ‘Vieira in “and Jamie [O’Hara] made me laugh at the situation.

“I wanted Vieira before Arteta… he comes across as such a guy and look at how he transformed this Palace side.

“He’s such a character, he’s probably all that Arsenal lacks in terms of leadership and I think he would bring those young boys into play.

“I would have always wanted Vieira in the first place.”
