During the fight for the survival of the ship, a soldier died and 27 other crew members disappeared, the Ministry of Defense said
Following a fire on April 13, the flagship of the Black Sea Fleet Moskva was badly damaged due to an ammunition detonation, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Friday. A soldier died and 27 other crew members disappeared, he added.
Attempts by the crew to extinguish the fire were unsuccessful.
“During the fight for damage to the ship, one serviceman was killed, 27 other crew members were missing. The remaining 396 crew members were evacuated from the cruiser to the ships of the Black Sea Fleet in the region and taken to Sevastopol.” said the ministry.
The vast majority of officers, midshipmen and sailors in the cruiser’s contract service Moscow expressed a desire to continue serving on ships of the Black Sea Fleet, the ministry added.
A number of military personnel who wished to transfer to other garrisons will continue to serve on ships of other fleets. The Ministry of Defense said it was providing all necessary support and assistance to relatives and friends of the deceased and missing crew members of the Moscow.
The Russian military announced earlier that the Moscow sank while being towed to port in poor sea conditions. The MoD said the warship’s hull was damaged by an ammunition explosion caused by a fire on board.
Prior to Russian military allegations of a fire aboard the Moscow, kyiv said the ship was hit by Ukrainian anti-ship missiles. The head of the military administration of the Odessa region, Maxim Marchenko, claimed that “very significant damage” to Moscow was caused by Ukrainian Neptune missiles fired from Odessa.
Russia attacked the neighboring state in late February, following Ukraine’s failure to implement the terms of the Minsk agreements, first signed in 2014, and Moscow’s eventual recognition of the republics from the Donbass of Donetsk and Lugansk. The protocols negotiated by Germany and France were designed to give breakaway regions a special status within the Ukrainian state.
The Kremlin has since demanded that Ukraine officially declare itself a neutral country that will never join the US-led NATO military bloc. kyiv insists the Russian offensive was unprovoked and has denied claims it planned to retake the two republics by force.
