MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) — A bomb attack by extremist Somali Islamic rebels hit a popular beachfront restaurant in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, killing at least six people, ambulance service officials said.
The blast was caused by a suicide bomber who was denied access inside the restaurant where the Somali Police Commissioner and several lawmakers were dining, Somali Police Spokesman Maj. Abdifatah Aden Hassan, during a press conference.
The explosion happened on Friday evening when many customers gathered for an Iftar meal to break the Ramadan fast. The restaurant is frequented by government officials.
Those killed were mostly civilians and seven others were injured, Aamin Ambulance Service Manager Abdulkadir Adan told The Associated Press by telephone. The explosion caused “enormous damage”, he said. Some security personnel were killed in the blast, but police did not say how many.
Somali Islamist group al-Shabab claimed responsibility for the blast.
