The mother of the friends of Navarre found dead to found a foundation in her honor

NAVARRA, Fla. (WKRG) — Friends of Cassie Carli, 37, the Navarrese mother found dead in a shallow grave in Alabama after a week of searching, plan to fortify her legacy by establishing the Cassie Carli Foundation.

Sam Graves, one of Cassie’s best friends, told WKRG News 5 that she was working on the legal process Monday to create the foundation to protect women and men in custody exchanges and domestic violence. .

Cassie had met her ex-boyfriend Marcus Spanevelo at Navarre Beach on Sunday to drop off her daughter Saylor. Cassie was never heard from or seen alive again. Spanevelo is the suspect in Carli’s disappearance and death.

“The Cassie Carli Foundation’s mission statement will be: to save women from the clutches of domestic violence and to keep them safe,” Graves said Monday. “We (will focus) on three different areas: prevention, protection and support.”

Graves said that in the prevention category, the foundation will provide an extra pair of eyes during custody trades.

“I’m going to sit in the parking lot,” Graves said. “No one should see me. But, I will be there in the shadows in case anything goes wrong. I will be there in the shadows to call 911 immediately.”

The foundation also plans to focus on educating victims of domestic violence, Graves said.

“Education on the statistics of ‘it can happen to you’ and education on how to escape a situation,” she said. “We will provide legal assistance…to work with victims to obtain protective orders. Work with them through custody battles.

Graves adds that the foundation plans to provide safe housing for women who “have nowhere to go and are afraid to leave their abuser.”

“For support, we will offer counseling to both the victim and the children if children are involved,” she said.

There is also a push from Graves to pass “Cassie’s Law”.

“I’m hoping to pass ‘Cassie’s Law’,” Graves said. “If a parent disappears during a custody exchange, the non-disappearing parent is prohibited from maintaining custody until the other person is found or that person is 100% cleared by law enforcement. order.”

Graves said he will miss Cassie – he already misses her laugh. Graves hopes the foundation will keep Cassie’s legacy and the victims of domestic violence alive.

“The world has lost the best friend to have,” she said. “Cassie was a fighter.”
