UNCW’s Bucci Named ASUN Athlete of the Year

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Sophomore from UNCW Ellie Bucci was honored as ASUN’s Researcher-Athlete of the Year and was joined by Sadie Sharkey being named to ASUN’s All-Academic Team after strong seasons in the classroom and on the field.

Bucci, an environmental science major, posted a 4.00 grade point average while Sharkey fashioned a 3.92 grade point average and is a chemistry major.

Going into this weekend’s ASUN Championship Tournament, Bucci carries a 20-9 playoff record. Her 20 wins are second on the team and she went 15-8 in Game 3.

Sharkey, meanwhile, holds a 17-13 record while splitting time between the top two pairs. She went 10-8 in top pairing alongside Mattie Johnson and is 7-5 on the second pairing.

The Seahawks enter the championship as the fourth seed in their first season as a conference member. UNCW, which is 9-3 against league opponents, opens the tournament against top seed Stetson on April 22 at 9:30 a.m. EST.
