Unidentified hiker found dead on Georgia’s Appalachian Trail


KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is asking for the public’s help in identifying the man found dead on the Appalachian Trail. The man was found Jan. 21 off the Benton MacKaye Trail in Fannin County, Georgia.

The man was wearing a small gray t-shirt, a gray fleece long-sleeved shirt, beige Wrangler size 30×32 cargo pants, gray wool socks and Keen size 10.5 hiking boots.

The man had in his possession a black Thermal-FR sweatshirt, a dark gray Champion sweatshirt, a black Uline skullcap with a rechargeable lamp attachment and a small black folding shovel.

A render of the man created by a forensic artist can be found below along with photos of what he was wearing.

This investigation remains active and ongoing. GBI is asking anyone with information regarding the man to contact the GBI office in Cleveland at 706-348-4866. Anonymous tips can be submitted by calling 1-800-597-TIPS, online at or through the See Something, Send Something mobile app.
