Anderson reacts to suspension for gesture to Cleveland fans originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago
White Sox shortstop Tim Anderson has been handed a one-game suspension following a rude gesture towards Cleveland fans during a game on Wednesday.
Anderson declined to comment when asked about it Thursday, but responded when asked after the game against the Minnesota Twins.
“I have to apologize for my actions,” Anderson said. “There are a lot of people who really look up to me. I take full responsibility for what I’ve done. It’s something I have to learn from and grow from.
“The game can be difficult and you can get frustrated with the things people say. But there are a lot of kids watching. I have to be a bigger person in this situation.
Anderson made three errors in the first game of a two-sided Cleveland Guardians, which led to the frustration and ensuing gesture.
Things didn’t go much better for Anderson or the White Sox on Friday night as they blew a one-point lead and lost 2-1 to the Twins. The 28-year-old made a throwing error in the eighth which led to the equalizer.
After recovering the errant pitch, Jose Abreu committed one of his own on his pitch to home plate, resulting in the game-winning run to score.
The shortstop has now committed six errors in the last six games and his team is in the midst of a five-game losing streak.
Anderson has appealed his suspension and is now awaiting a response from the league.
