Yankees fans throw trash at Cleveland OFs in foot win

An RBI single from Gleyber Torres gave the Yankees a thrilling 5-4 win over the Cleveland Guardians on Saturday afternoon.

However, instead of a joyous celebration inside Yankee Stadium, chaos erupted on the field after fans behind the right field fence began throwing trash at Cleveland outfielders Oscar Mercado and Myles Straw. .

Objects began flying from the Mercado and Straw bleachers as they chased down Torres’ kick. Mercado had to be held back by teammates and security before Yankees players arrived on the scene to try to calm things down.

“They need to be held accountable, and I think there should be rules set for that because it’s ridiculous, and it shouldn’t happen,” Mercado said after the game. “Say what you mean and do what you want to do, but ultimately there have to be consequences for behavior like this.”

Tensions had risen just before the Yankees left; Cleveland right fielder Steven Kwan collided with the outfield wall in pursuit of a fly ball. As the team coach watched Kwan, Mercado alleged that a fan in the stands was celebrating the injury. Mercado and Straw confronted the fan, with Straw even climbing to the top of the fence to exchange words.

“I just let him know, ‘listen man, you can tweet all you want but don’t celebrate somebody getting hurt’, Mercado said. “It’s classless, and it shouldn’t be a thing.”

The Guardians and Yankees end a three-game series at Yankee Stadium on Sunday; Gerrit Cole takes the mound for New York, while Aaron Civale takes the hill for Cleveland.
